Why important AI Skills deserve a backup
A useful Skill can become difficult to recover when it remains only inside an old AI chat, a single document or a folder that no one can clearly identify later.
Backing it up gives you a separate, dependable copy. It reduces the risk of losing proven work when a chat is deleted, an instruction is overwritten or your preferred AI tool changes.

Keep meaningful versions and identify the current one
A backup should not become a pile of copies named “final,” “latest” and “new.” Keep versions that worked well, introduced an important change or give you a useful recovery point.
Clearly identify which version is current and record a short note about what changed. If a newer version performs worse, you can return to an earlier working version with its correct files and references.
A clear version record can show:

- What changed and why

Keep backups independent from a single platform

Record the relevant platform when it adds useful context. A Skill can behave differently between tools, so review and test the version where it will be used.
